From Our Formulation Team

Topical CBD 101

When we founded Kannaco, the most common question we heard was: 'I tried CBD oil and nothing happened. Why would a cream be any different?' It is a fair question — and the answer changed everything about how we formulate. Here is what we learned.

The Biology

Your Skin Has Its Own Endocannabinoid System — and We Designed Our Formulas to Work With It

When our formulation team started researching topical CBD delivery, we did not just look at the skin as a barrier to overcome. We looked at it as an active biological system. What we found changed our entire approach to formulation.

Receptors Are Everywhere in Your Skin

CB1 and CB2 receptors are distributed throughout your body — including your skin, peripheral nerves, and connective tissue. Your skin is not passive. It is an active, receptor-dense organ.

Cannabinoids Bind to Those Receptors

When you apply a Kannaco topical, the CBD and CBG we have formulated into it interact directly with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in your skin and underlying tissue — right at the site of application.

The Response Is Localized — Exactly Where You Need It

Because topical cannabinoids do not enter the bloodstream, the entire ECS response is concentrated in the tissue beneath the application site. Targeted, localized, and efficient.

CB1 vs. CB2 Receptors — Why the Distinction Matters for Topicals

CB1

CB1 Receptors

Primarily concentrated in the central nervous system. CB1 receptors are responsible for the psychoactive effects of THC. They are also found in peripheral nerves and sensory fibers in the skin — which is why we include CBG in our formulas to engage this pathway without any psychoactivity.

Primary locations:
Brain & CNS Peripheral nerves Skin sensory fibers Spinal cord
CBD does not bind directly to CB1 receptors — it modulates them indirectly. This is why Kannaco topicals are non-intoxicating.
CB2

CB2 Receptors

The most relevant receptor for topical applications. CB2 receptors are densely concentrated in immune cells, skin keratinocytes, hair follicles, and connective tissue — exactly the tissue layers our formulas are designed to reach.

Primary locations:
Skin keratinocytes Immune cells Hair follicles Connective tissue
CBG has direct CB2 receptor affinity. This is one of the primary reasons we formulate with a 1:1 CBD:CBG ratio — it broadens the receptor coverage beyond what CBD alone can achieve.

What This Means for You

Your skin already has a receptor system designed to respond to cannabinoids. We did not invent that — we just built a formula that actually delivers cannabinoids to it. When you apply a Kannaco topical, you are working with your body's own recovery network, not against it.

The Mechanism

Why Most CBD Creams Do Not Work — and What We Did Differently

The skin is designed to keep things out. That is its primary job. We spent over a year solving this problem — because getting cannabinoids through the skin barrier is the difference between a product that works and one that does not.

Stratum Corneum Primary barrier — must be crossed
Penetration required
Epidermis Keratinocytes with CB2 receptors
Dermis CB1 & CB2 receptors · nerve fibers · connective tissue
Primary target zone
Hypodermis Subcutaneous fat & deep tissue support

The Four Factors Our Formulation Team Optimized

Particle Size

Smaller cannabinoid particles penetrate the skin barrier more effectively. Our hyper-emulsion process reduces particle size at the molecular level.

Lipid Solubility

CBD is naturally lipophilic — fat-soluble — which gives it an inherent advantage for skin absorption. We leverage this chemistry in every formula.

Penetration Enhancers

We selected specific botanical compounds — menthol, camphor, and arnica — that temporarily open the skin barrier to allow deeper cannabinoid delivery.

Emulsion Architecture

An oil-in-water emulsion is the foundation of an effective topical. Most brands skip this step. We built our entire manufacturing process around it.

Kannaco Technology

The Hyper-Emulsion Difference

Most CBD topicals are made by stirring CBD isolate into a pre-made lotion base. The cannabinoids clump, distribute unevenly, and never fully penetrate the skin. We watched this happen in testing and refused to accept it.

Kannaco uses a proprietary oil-in-water hyper-emulsion process: cannabinoids are fully dissolved and dispersed into the formulation at the molecular level before the cream is set. The result is 100% uniform distribution and consistent delivery with every application.

Our Formulation Science

Why Our Formulas Perform Differently

We did not build three products to fill a product line. We built three distinct formulas because our customers have three distinct needs. Here is the data behind each one — and the reasoning behind every decision.

Terpene Synergy — Why the Entourage Effect Matters to Us

When we formulated Kannaco topicals, we did not stop at CBD and CBG. We selected nine functional terpenes specifically for their ability to enhance cannabinoid penetration, modulate receptor activity, and contribute their own comfort-supporting properties. This is what the entourage effect actually looks like in practice.

β-Caryophyllene CB2 receptor agonist
Limonene Penetration enhancer
Eucalyptol TRPM8 cold receptor · penetration
Eugenol Warming · aromatic depth
Bisabolol Anti-irritant · skin soothing
Linalool Calming · skin barrier support

Why We Only Make Topicals

We Chose One Thing — and We Made It Work

When we started Kannaco, the topical CBD market was already crowded. Every brand was making a cream. Most of them were doing it the same way: take a standard lotion base, stir in some CBD isolate, slap a label on it, and call it a wellness product. We tried those products. They did not work.

We are a topical-only brand — not because it was the easy path, but because we believe targeted, localized delivery is the most effective way to support daily comfort and recovery for active adults. We did not want to make a little bit of everything. We wanted to make one category of product so well that it actually changed how people feel.

The problem was not the cannabinoid. CBD and CBG are genuinely effective compounds with real receptor activity in the skin and underlying tissue. The problem was the formulation. A cannabinoid sitting on the surface of your skin cannot reach the receptors it needs to reach. Penetration is everything — and the industry standard was, and largely still is, to ignore it.

So we rebuilt the formula from the ground up. We developed a hyper-emulsion process that disperses cannabinoids at the molecular level for uniform, deep delivery. We added nine functional terpenes selected specifically to enhance penetration and broaden receptor activity. We sourced a 1:1 CBD:CBG ratio because the science on CBG's direct CB2 receptor affinity is compelling and underutilized. And we third-party tested everything through SC Labs so you never have to take our word for it.

We are not trying to be everything to everyone. We make one category of product — topicals — and we have spent years making sure they actually work.

What Sets a Kannaco Topical Apart

The four decisions that define our formulas

Oral CBD
  • Travels through digestive system
  • Processed by the liver (first-pass metabolism)
  • Enters bloodstream — systemic distribution
  • 30–90 min onset
  • Significant bioavailability loss (~6–20%)
  • Whole-body effect — not targeted
Topical CBD
  • Applied directly to skin
  • Absorbs locally through skin layers
  • Does not enter bloodstream
  • 15–45 sec onset (sensation)
  • Concentrated local delivery
  • Targeted — exactly where you need it

Every decision we made — the emulsion process, the cannabinoid ratio, the terpene selection, the third-party testing — was made because the industry standard was not good enough. We built the product we wanted to use ourselves.
