I think it's safe to say we have all been there, tossing and turning, struggling to find sleep as the minutes turn into hours, and the pressure to go back to sleep mounts into the wee hours of the morning.
I'd also say it's safe to say you encounter countless product ads guaranteed to solve your issues with sleep. Well, CBD and Melatonin are two players that seem to be repeat entanglers in this affair, so the question seems to present itself – should you look to combine these two contenders to find some 😴
As we dive into the two contenders in the quest for a good night’s sleep, it’s important and interesting to note that melatonin and CBD actually have a lot in common in terms of how they work. Also, they both have in common that they work to supplement what our body produces naturally.
In this corner, we have our personal favorite (our name probably gave that away), CBD. For the purposes of this article, I’m going to give a brief overview, but if you’d like to get a deeper dive CBD itself, check out our blog “What is CBD?” here!
CBD works with what is called our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) that stimulates when systems in the body fall out of balance. It does so in an indirect manner by actually stimulating the production our naturally occurring cannabinoids, which bind to the receptors within our ECS to spur this system to action. The result? Many report feelings of calm and relief from stresses throughout the day when taking a routine CBD supplement (this is excluding the topical pain relief benefits, but we’ll cover that elsewhere 😉
So, what’s this all have to do with sleep, right? Much like melatonin, CBD doesn’t “knock you out” itself. It more so supports a restful state that has you ready for bed. Think of your bedtime ritual – maybe dimming the lights a bit, putting on some soothing music, and reading a calm book.
Of course, in the other corner, we have melatonin. The primary function of melatonin is to signal to your brain that it’s time for bed – yes, that may seem obvious based on the context of this blog, right? Well, one important note is that melatonin doesn’t itself put you to sleep, it simply puts you in a “sleep-ready” state. A hormone produced by our brains, melatonin occurs naturally and begins to secrete usually based on a light-based circadian rhythm, meaning well get a natural dose during the evening.
Some people don’t find that this natural dose of melatonin is enough, though. Hence the production and consumption of additional melatonin supplements. With that said, there is such thing as too much of a good thing here. Experts usually recommend limiting the amount of melatonin you’re taking to be from about 0.5mg - 3mg depending on the extent of the sleep issues you are facing.
What have become partners in crime don’t necessarily work together, but they work side by side. What you're doing when you combine these two supplements is enhancing your overall restful state that you are seeking by both working in their own way to accomplish this.
To align the effects of both CBD and Melatonin with your natural sleep cycle, it’s usually recommended that you take your supplement around 45 minutes to one hour before your planning to hit the hay.
